IN A DAY'S WORK

We packed up and left SLC about 6:00 pm on friday. Got to Moab about 10, threw out our sleeping bags and settled in for the night. The next morning we awoke to clear skies and warm temperatures. A very nice day for the White Rim trail. We rode the trail counter clockwise which seemed to be fine to me. In fact, I think I'd rather spend the last few miles climbing up Shafer switch-backs than on that long, not so flat dirt road. In my opinion, it's better to get that out of the way first.

The trail was great, the conditions were perfect and the companie was even better. I'm defenatly going to put this on my to do list at leas once a year if not twice. In fact, I was thinking... In order to take it all in, why not take three days and ride it three times. That way you can be sure to get it all in. Who's with me? Hey! Check out some more pics here.

All across the Wasatch, blogs, tweets and facebook updates are being decorated with stunning fall colors. How sweet it is. I'd love to do the same but I've since given up my camera possessing rights to SDAY and Layla, as they document their daily adventures at home and in the park. So imagine with me...

We're riding some really nice single track, the air is crispy warm with a slight northerly breeze. Brightly colored leaves fall from the trees and decorate the trail as if the mountains we're celebrating our arrival in ticker-tape style. We pass along a babbling brook where a mother deer and her fawn stop to take a drink. We pass with care as to not disturb their quiet moment. Further up the trail we notice a family of squirrels gathering acorns and other necessities to bring back to their den, as old man winter is whispering of his arrival.

At the top of the trail we pause for a moment to observe two unicorns as they frolic in the wild flowers, chasing one another through the meadow and on the shores of a crystal clear lake. Over the mountain peaks in the distance the sun begins to set as the sky beams in gradients of red, yellow and orange. The soft puffy clouds that were once as white and pure, are now blending in with the vast and colorful forest that surrounds us.

Before we begin our decent, I reach into my pocket and grab what I think is a Clif bar but is actually a pack of Skittles. How ironic. Even our treats have take on the colorful scene that seems to be consuming us. Just as we finish our bag of delicious, sugar treats, the unicorns approach as if they have something to tell us. I display the universal hand signal to notify them that we are not a threat. The bow to show their acceptance and move even closer. Then, with no warning at all the unicorns begin to attack you with their sharp, sparkly horns. In a way it's beautiful. As they slash and stab, their horns leave a glittery trail through the air which only adds to the already beautiful scenery. As they finish their work, they now step closer to me. They pause for a moment. Then wings sprout from their back and open wide as they extend into the brisk mountain air. Rearing on the hind legs they begin to sprint across the lake, their hoofs barley touching the water. "Thank you" I yell to them as they magically fly away. Now I can rip the DH without you slowing me down.

HAPPY GIRLS

In route to Moab this weekend when my father came down with something mean and nasty. We decided to call it and come home. I was excited to spend a little time in Southern Utah with my pops and do some quality riding, but instead got some well deserved time in with the family at home.

Layla was pretty happy about that.

Kashi was throwing cannon balls and practicing his long jump off the diving board and soon realized how much he likes to be held while in the pool. After that I couldn't keep him out.

My nephews birthday party at the cabin with moose sightings. Shan didn't like the idea of me following him around so she made me watch from the deck.

I've taken some nice time off the bike the past two weeks but I'm excited to get back into the swing of things. Fall is simply the best time to ride so hopefully we'll be filling the posts up with colorized onetrack photos. Layla's getting pretty excited to ride as well and just the other day she received her first official number plate. Ed and Sue know how to start em early.

HOME RUN

The PCP2P went off perfect today. A little bit of wind and rain to start things off made for sweet conditions all over. It took me about an hour and a half to actually wake up and start racing and then I crashed. No worries though. I bounced up like a rubber ball and kept on keeping on. After seven hours and twenty minutes, I finished the day off in fourth place, just behind Alex Grant, Bart Gillespie and Chris Holley. Firth rounded up the podium with a fifth place. Utah boys represent.

A HUGE shout out to Jay Burke, Shannon Boffeli, and their entire swat team of supporters who made it all happen. Also a big shout out for the entire camelbak of Carb Rocket that fueled my fire for the first half of the race. It's beautiful when you can throw in a drink mix for the first time and know it's going to be solid. Thanks BK. Primetime for handing out cash in the feedzones. An of course an even BIGGER shout out to SDAY and FDAY (my dad) for dedicating another full Saturday to watch me for a few seconds at a time over seven hours. I couldn't do this without you.

PC TV was there shooting some footage and photographers around every corner. I'm sure I'll post some more updates as the media comes in.

AMAZING PROOF

I'm truly amazed at what the human body can do. Over the years I feel like I've tested mine on many occasions. Just when I feel like I've hit the limit, there seems to be a little and sometimes a lot more in the reserve tank, just waiting for me to switch over. What's even more amazing than our ability to push our bodies to their limit is the ability and natural defense mode that occurs, when something traumatic happens.

Today I witnessed the worst cycling accident I've ever seen. My good friend Tolbert and I were in a group of riders heading down AF canyon when an SUV that was in front of us slammed on their brakes. As fast as everything happened I felt like I could see every aspect of the accident. Cyclists were going down in every direction, glass and bike parts as well. The man who took the brunt of the crash was now on the ground and in BAD shape. I was in shock as stood there for what seemed to be an eternity then in that instant back to reality. Everyone on the scene sprang into action. It was amazing. There was a lady on the phone with 911, she was calm and collective, providing dispatch with exact information on each of the victims while the rest of us began to direct traffic and tend to those in need.

A blessing was administered to the man on the scene and medics soon arrived. Two were taken by ambulance to the hospital and the other by Air Med. From the news report this evening the two were doing well while the other man had gone through two surgeries and was expected to improve.

I'm amazed that despite having his jugular sliced open from his chin to sternum, you could tell his body was working overtime and in defense mode to sustain his life and keep things going. This is just another testament to me of how amazing and fortunate we are to be such complex living, breathing spirits, created by the most amazing designer ever.

THE BMC SQUAD WAVES

Got out on a nice ride this afternoon up Emigration canyon. Temps were right nice. After that I decide to cruse over to City Creek and see if the city was doing anything to prep for the Tour. They put up a sign!

Also, Louder and his BMC squad was out dialing in their TT bikes. They wave at other cyclists. I'm guessing they weren't intensely training for LOTOJA. Though I do need to give a thank you to my good friend Weston, who offered me his brothers spot for the September event. Unfortunately I won't be able to take it. I appreciate the offer though. It's a good excuse for a weekend in Jackson.

HE MADE IT RAIN

Spent most of the day riding DH bikes off the chair ad DV. Thanks to Firth for hooking us up and making things possible. Skid, Tolbert and I put in a few laps from noon until five pm. Dropping big drops, riding really fast and skidding around corners.

Shannon and Jen were also up ripping the trails. Jen stuck it to Shannon when he was trying to follow her over a teeter-totter bridge and he came up a bit short.

Layla was shocked when I told her about the trails we rode

and Primetime made it rain from his rooftop this evening at his birthday bash.

He then showed the large number of top Utah cyclists how to pound some chocolate cake, dance to techno, and the proper way to douse the fire with gasoline. Thankfully no one was injured and I made $4. Thanks Cris. Happy birthday!

Hopefully even though I didn't fair too well in the race on Sat. Layla will know that at least I didn't give up.

I felt pretty good off the start. The pro mens field didn't seem to push it into the red zone as it usually does and continues to do throughout the race. As I was finishing our first small lap and headed out for three big laps, I was JRA (Just Racing Along) when my rear derailleur found its way into the spokes. After what sounded like an automobile crash of metal twisting and snapping and tires skidding on dirt, I jumped off my bike to see if I could make a quick fix and continue on. Nope. My derailleur was wrapped around my cassette, my qr was busted, hanger slightly bent and a few spokes were snapped in half. Which I do need to give some credit to the Edge wheels. For as much damage to the rest of the bike as there was, the wheel, despite being a few spokes short now, was still in pretty good form.

After dilly-dallying for about 15 min. and assuming I was done for the day, Ty Hansen offered me his Scalpel to finish off the race. I'd like to think of my self as a person who doesn't give up so I took him up on the offer. I wasn't entirely impressed with the course after riding it the week before and I now had to face the biggest challenge of the day. Making my way through the later part of all the expert classes to chase down the pro men. I picked my way through wilt only a few passing issues here and there but for the most part everyone was pretty good to let me by. I never really caught back up but I finished feeling pretty strong and I'm happy about that.

When I finished, Shan, Layla and Kashi had arrived to join the festivities of the after race BBQ. Kashi was sporting his big, I'm happy to be out smile, while Layla was showing off her sporty side with her new team Kuhl onsie that I made for her the night before.

Congrats to the Kuhl team for another outstanding show. D Welsh managed to stay on the podium for the race and the overall. Tolbert and Tolbert Jr. pulled off another win (that's three in a row for Brian) and also took the #1 spots for the overall.

Later hat night we hug out at the Huff's for a little neighbor hood BBQ that was top notch. What a very fine day.

I simply can't say enough good things about SDAY, but I though this pic might help express how awesome she is. From day one of being a mother she stepped up to the plate and has been knocking them out of the park with every pitch. Even the curve balls. Along with being and excellent mom, she continues to be an excellent wife. She understands that the future doesn't look too bright for me to grow up and stop riding bicycles everywhere and she's willing to continually sacrifice her time so that I can have mine. Hopefully one day I'll be able to pay her back but I know it won't be a fair trade. Shan is my favorite.

WE TOOK THE LONG ROUTE

From Pleasant Grove to Park City on the dirt.

Ryan and I left PG around 6:45 am and headed straight up Grove Creek trail. From there we connected to a road (Timp road) and headed North into American Fork canyon. Rode single track to the top and even more back down to Tibble Fork Resivour. Filled our bottles and packs then climbed to Mineral Basin. From there we continued to the top of the Bird and down the front side to fill up once again and grab a bite to eat on the sun deck. After our quick rest stop we continued to climb up Little Cottonwood to the Alta Brighton Trail that took us through Grizzly Gulch and over the top and down into Solitude. We stayed right and made our way to Brighton to fill replenish our liquids and then it was off to the Crest Trail. From the Crest, we dropped into Park City and rode all kinds of sweet single track to finish off the day. Twelve hours from start to finish. I'm not sure the amount of climbing but from a few guesstimates, it may be around 15K, give or take. Lets do it again sometime.

First off, the team deserves a big shout out. We had a few State Champs crowned on Sat. Dave Welsh in the pro mens field, Brian Tolbert in the mens expert 19-29 and Joanne in the womens expert. Also, the rest of the crew that laid it down in their respective categories. As for me... We'll I had high hopes that for some crazy reason I'd still be holding a little form and snap in the legs to hang with guys up front, but it wasn't the case. I just didn't have much in the tank on Sat. but thanks to my dad, sister and her three kids I think I had the loudest and most enthusiastic fan club of the day. I was suffering a bit but every lap they seem to make me smile as I came through the feed zone. My nephew even had a home-made sign that he held up for me as I passed. It said "Life is good when Kevin is in the house". There were a slew of photographers on the course but no one has posted anything yet... When I find some, I'll showcase those mentioned above.

I'm curious to know if anyone else feels the same about the Tour. You see, after todays stage, it feels even more like a well written script for a Hollywood block buster. The American returns to the sport and everyone expects him to win. 90% of the race coverage is always on him, even when he's getting dropped. His teammate laid it down today and now wears the yellow jersey. The suspense builds... Has Armstron lost his chance? It comes down to stage 18 where Lance makes up a few seconds in the TT, then stage 20. Lance gives Contador the look and blows up the entire field for the stage win and the yellow jersey. Just a thought.

It was great to see Contador light em up like he did today and I certainly hope he can hold on to this one. I think he really deserves it. As for Lance, I'd love to see him do it as well, but I've already stated my case there.

ALMOST HOME

After a few more tests, a good bath and a new outfit, Layla was discharged at 10 am. She was awesome all morning long. wide awake and not cry from her little body. When it came time to make our drive from Modesto to Sacramento, she closed her eyes and didn't make a peep the entire drive. I'm sure the quietness will wear off soon, but for now, Shan and I are relishing every second we get.

We're all settled in for now, but will be headed back to Utah soil tomorrow. It will be nice to have our little girl home, but I am a bit sad to leave everything we have here in California behind. Although it took our family a little extra time to get started, Shannon and I now know exactly why. From the first email we received from our Birthmother in March, to cards, letters and gifts she left by her bassinet late last night, we now know the true meaning of sacrifice and selflessness. A beautiful girl with a heart of gold, touched and guided by the spirit, and led to us. What an amazing story it has been and will continue to be as we watch our Layla grow up and constantly remind us of how truly blessed we really are. We have amazing family and friends who have never stopped supporting us along the way and now, we're so fortunate to share this with an entirely new and wonderful family. The love they shared with our baby girl will always be a cherished part of Layla's life

SHE DOES TRI AND SHE WINS

Dedicated to my one and only... SDAY. Today, Shan not only conquered a few of her fears, but she also proved to her self, that she IS and amazing person. I've known that all along.

Shan continues to amaze me with her willingness to set lofty goals and without any problems, achieve them. Over the past five and half years she has endured many things. She's overcome some major health issues and proved to me that despite certain conditions, she will not give up on the dreams she truly believes in. We've both made a few sacrifices and had to change directions numerous times but because of that we've become stronger and grown closer with each day. Now as I see her giving her best as something she has truly worked hard for, I find myself in envy of her drive and new outlook on life. She's an amazing woman and will continue to be throughout her life.

Shan, I'm so proud of you and want you to know how much I look up to you for your strength and determination. Great job today and good luck in the future. As you have always been there cheering on the sidelines for me, I will be there also for you.

PCTV does a pretty nice job of stitching things together at some of our races. As always, some Kuhl blue can be seen tearing it up. A nice shot of the Pro men leaving the line, DW attacking on Little Stick, Tolbet bringing the heat and even Trev, shedding some clothing... I'm assuming if he knew the camera was pointed in his direction, they would have pulled that clip.

Fathers Day. It's a big day. Almost as big as Mothers Day, but not quite. It's an unusual feeling actually celebrating it for the first time but I know it's real. And just because we haven't been placed with a baby yet, it doesn't mean I need to ignore it all like usual.

The past two weeks SDAY and I have spent a fair amount of time around the house, getting things prepared for our new addition. Friday night was possibly the best night of all. I may not have shown my enthusiasm but inside I was jumping for joy. We set up most everything for the nursery. Now every time I walk in the room that once felt like an office, now feels like a warm and welcome place for any child. Shan has spent a lot of late nights checking things off her list to make sure we can be as prepared as possible and that we an focus on welcoming the baby into her new home.

On this Fathers Day, I want to give a special thanks to my wife for helping me become the Father I am and will be. She is an excellent example and a constant inspiration.

POINT TO POINT RECON

5 hrs in the saddle today riding some of Utah's best singletrack and doing a little recon work for the Point to Point race in September. Led by MTB Race News author and race promoter Shannon Boffeli, my self, Tolbert, Blaney, Firth, Heather Holms, Duff? We took to the trails early this morning. Starting in Deer Valley and ended up at the Canyons. To say it lightly, we got involved in a bit of a rain storm on Mid Mountain, between Park City and the Canyons. Heather flatted twice and while some of us stayed behind others kept going in hopes of finding warmth and shelter. After a little re-coup, we took gondola down and peadled back to DV. It was an excellent day on the bike, with excellent company. More photos here:::

A HOODSIE FOR OUR BABY GIRL

As anticipation builds, SDAY and I have decided to make our first official public announcement concerning our progress in the adoption scene. That being said, a beautiful and selfless Birthmother from California has chosen us to place her baby girl with. She's due July 10.

It's been quite the journey so far and as we look back as well as forward, we recognize the many wonderful blessings that have guided us to and through, this process. Surrounded and supported by amazing family and friends who have all sacrificed more than their share on our behalf, we are getting closer to building our family with the dreams of beautiful children. We are optimistic and know that at any point in time the hand of the Lord will guide this process as He sees fit. We are eternally grateful to all you who have stood by us through this and willingly lent us your shoulder or extended your hand to help us back up. We are very thankful to our Birthmother's family for their kind support those at LDS family services who have helps along the way.

I can't wait to do a bit more shopping on one of my favorite T sites.

To sum up the weekend (and thanks to my wonderful wife for spreading the word) R&R Partners had a great showing and I couldn't be more pleased to have been a part of it.

Our gold medal work was a campaign we did for Utah Highway Safety, with an anti drunk driving message. The work included:
A full stall wrap for the men's and women's restroom in a popular bar in down town SLC.

We wrapped a photo booth for college campuses, where students could have their mug-shots taken in advance.

And some toilet bowl stickers. Our runner had the opportunity to place these stickers (and pose for the photo) in toilets of bars in down town. They read: If you can read this, call a cab.

Thank you to everyone for the support, texts and emails and to Obama for the flyby in Marine One.

I don't quite get it and I know it's not by designers choice. Say you're walking through the market, checking items off you list, when you notice that a particular product has had a bit of a face lift. In most cases its a bit more refined, and has a fresh new feel. Generally the product behind the new packaging is still the same, but in some cases, you can't help but feel like maybe it too has been spruced up a bit. I fully support a good redesign and am constantly thinking about my own, all the time. For me, it's an adaptation and an opportunity to utilize new skills and techniques. For companies selling product, it's a chance to communicate to the consumer, information with a new visual, in hopes of educating and or increasing sales.

It's a designers job to take existing brands and design standards and wave our magic wands to make them better. And in many cases, the abra-cadabra works and products tend to sit a little taller among the others that are awaiting their own redesign. But before all this happens, the big corporate giants fly in and demand that the new package that now looks and communicates much better than the old package is stamped with they're final word. "NEW FRESH LOOK"

I can just hear it now. "Oh wow, that new package looks great. Consumers are going to love it. Great job. Just one thing though... I'd really like you to put a bright star-burst in one of the top corners and some brightly colored text on there that tells everyone that there's a new look.

Are we so visually impaired that we can't recognize products after they've had a bit of a face lift, that we need to be reminded that our eyes are not playing tricks on us?

HOW MEMORIAL

After some small (or big) delays, yesterdays XC race got underway around 1 in the afternoon. Because of the silky mud situation on Clarks and Ghost Falls, a few of us chatted with Ed Chaunner, the race promoter about the possibility of changing the course. A quick decision was made and a new course was marked. The laps were a bit shorter but it made for some excellent mountain bike racing. The field was tight through most of the race which made the pace much faster and more tactical. It was a nice brake form the typical big climb and big descents of the series. Don't get me wrong, a nice long climb is always good for the mind and body, but when you can race on sweet singletrack with a few river crossings all on the Draper bench, I think you better take advantage of it. The race went very well for myself and the entire Kuhl team. I'll post some photos as soon as our photographer sends them to me. For now, I'll rip some off from Zazoosh.

After the race I drove home and went out on the road for a little recover ride with SDAY. She's putting in the time for her first triathlon scheduled in June. She's pulling two-a-days with and early morning run and some time on the bike in the p.m. She's a rock star!

It was handed to me at the Hollow. No worries though. I had a great time and nothing really feels better than getting back on your own mtb after three weeks away. Hopefully bits and pieces of the cycling I have done will contribute to a quick and seamless comeback.

I'm also going to be conducting a scientific experiment. It has to do with dreams the night before a race. If any of you have an experience with that let me know. I'd be interested to hear if you've had good or bad dreams pertaining to the race the next morning and how the race actually compared to your dream.

A big thanks to SDAY for being my biggest fan, the Kuhl team for their amazing support and Brian and Heather for hosting a sweet BBQ at their place in Heber. Sorry we stayed so long.

Plus, this was brought to my attention via Facebook. Some good Kuhl shots in there. Too bad they didn't fully get D-Welch attacking from the line and adding a little blue to the green train up front. Well done everyone and thanks PCTV for giving our sport a little pick-me-up. It's not an easy event to watch but when it's sticked together like this, it helps.

As much as I'd love to be in Switzerland, it's good to be home. SDAY and I had a great time with Matt and Kady, and if I could, I just might move to Switzerland someday. But for now, it's back into the swing of things with work, my wonderful but neglected yard, Kashi, and of course, the bicycle. I'm excited to get back to the racing side of things as well. I missed a pretty nasty 5-Mile, and due to a wonderful event, we were in California last weekend and I was no-show at Sherwood. Who knows what this weekend will bring at Solder Hollow, but I'm excited regardless.

SDAY and I spent the day in the Alps, checking out a few attractions. We road an alpine slide style coaster that was pretty cool. I filmed it with our nicer cam. but can't seem to download that video on the mac. Not sure why. After that, we signed up for the self guided tour of the ropes course. Basically, a bunch of "team building exercise" style logs, cables, ziplines and swings, suspended 50-60 feet above the ground. They give you a simple crash course on how to use a locking carabiners, then set you loose. Here's a few quick shots of the ziplines in and out of the woods.

I also got really lost the other day but found some very cool trails. Plus I crashed and wrecked our camera even more. Thanks to SDAY and the fact that she can fix anything, she worked her magic and got it back working again. Bringing busted up digital cameras back to life, just another check-mark on her list of awesome skills. As for me... I'll just keep riding bicycles.

Today started with an early ride to Steckborn which rests on the shores of the Bodensee (Lake Constance). Despite the rain, the ride was very plesent. 10K climb through the Swiss country side on delightfully smooth roads where every vehicle allows more than enough room to make any cyclist feel comfortable. The decent into Steckborn was great! Wishing I could have had it on video, but since my camera has sustained some minor injuries from a fall I took down the stairs in Munster, in Bern, I decided that water damage would put it over the top.

Later on, after Shan had returned from her morning run, we loaded up the car with our rain gear and a very large dog, and headed for Rheinfalls, near Schaffhausen. We decided to park a few miles up river and make the long, but very scenic trek to the falls by foot. It was very nice. Shannon and I had good chat along the way while Shan worked on some obedience training with Moose. She's like a freaking dog whisperer. Only she doesn't whisper. The falls were great. The air smelled like a giant fishery, which was a bit strange, but it sure was pretty.

Yesterday, Shan and I spent the day exploring Luzern, and the surrounding Alps. I brought the bicycle along but the rain was coming down at a fair rate so we kept it in the car. The winding roads and made Shan a bit sick and forced me to drive a little slower. In the process of getting some speed out later, I may have received a ticket or two from a "blitz box" on our way back. That sucks.

Also, Shan posted a few quick clips of the Euro car racing form the other day. I was surprised at the mix of ghetto looking cars and the real deals.

I apologize for falling off the post wagon for a few days, I've been busy. To recap on the trip so far, things have been very pleasant. As I said before, I could see myself living here but when I imagine that, I also imagine cycling every day in the summer and skiing in the winter. Maybe some freelance design work while I watch the sun set over the Alps and then retire with a good book by the fire place with Shan and Kashi. In reality, I would also love to live and work here but given the slight language barier, it may not work out so well in the begining.

Kady and Matt are now in South Africa, and it's up to Shannon and I to hold down the fort and take care of Moose. So far so good. We spent the entire day yesterday in the Alps, cycling and hiking. Shannon drove ahead with Moose and hiked around, while I rode up and down the steep mountain roads full of winding switchbacks and senic vistas. It was wonderful!

Today Shannon and I are off to see some European car racing at its best. Tomorrow and Tuesday will be more cycling and hiking in the Alps, Wed. we're hoping to meet up with some German friends, Thursday we'll be going back to Bern, for a day at the Temple, and some good eats at one of the street side cafes. Life is good on holiday. As always, more photos here.

In short, I rode mountain bike around the woods. Came across a very large tower. Climbed up the tower and took a photo of my bike below.

Visited the bike shop in Frauenfield. Arranged for a road bike over the weekend. Headed with Matt to meet Kady and Shannon in Zurich. We stopped at the FIFA building for a peek at some really nice soccer fields.

Met Kady and Shannon. Shannon showed me all the things she bought. Climbed a very long circle stair case to the top of another church. It was great!

Shopped around Zurich some more.

Hit up the BK on the way back. Spent $55.00 (dinner for 4) Switzerland isn't cheap. Back at Kady and Matt's for some flicks on Apple TV.

A fulfilling serving of the Swiss Alps was on our plate today and with looming clouds it was looking a bit iffy about shelling out some coin for the Jungfraubahnen cog wheel train.

When we arrived in Grindelwald, we were greeted by the Eiger, which stands at 13,026 feet. It was a beautiful site as the wispy clouds danced over its peak as they reached out to touch a mountain icon. The sun was shining way up there so we decided to go for it.

We boarded the cog wheel train and began our steep accent through Kleine Scheidegg resort. Unfortunatly, the snow was melting fast and the resort had just closed for the season but here were a handful of ski tours headed out for some of the higher, zero lift access peaks. I was so jealous. Reaching the top of the first train, we boarded another that travels via tunnel, through the Eiger, to the Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe. A maze of tunnels and elevator shafts snake their way through the top of the peak and finally open up to a large building with observation decks, restaurants, gift shops and art galleries. Only in Europe would there be such a building. And this isn't the only one.

From the top,the view was indescribable. I've seen photos before but first hand is the only way to really understand. I couldn't get enough. There were many tourists shuffling about, snapping photos and speaking in different tongues. Among them, the locals quietly sipped by with their backpacks full and skis over their shoulders. Headed out into what is possibly the most beautiful mountain landscape to slide around. I was still very jealous.

After soaking it all in for a while, we grabbed a braut in the cafeteria and ate while enjoying the views. Then, within a few seconds, the clouds moved in and we disappeared like a half naked woman in a David Copperfield magic act.

The rest of the day is basically the same story, just told in reverse. More photos here

We started the day in Germany this morning for a quick stroll near lake Constance. Narrow cobble stone streets lined with tall historic buildings and churches. We climbed the spires of the tallest church we could see which lead to excellent panoramic views of Northern Switzerland and well into Germany.

Later on we headed to down town Zurich, for a festival of Swiss proportions. A pretty wild parade snaked through down town. Not only did they throw a bit of candy here and there, but oddly enough, dead fish flew from many of the horse drawn carriages.

The parade continued to a park located near the water front, where on the stroke of 6:00 they burned a large structure/mounment that was said to indicate how the coming summer months would treat them. Didn't entirely make sense, but what do I know.

We dined in a fancy Swiss bistro where you could order a brat served on a sword. Had I know that, I would have made that my choice. Instead I ordered the "extremely slippery brat" that shoots off your plate and across the dining floor when you try to snatch it with your fork. At least Shan though it was entertaining. Yet another good day in the Schweiz.

I tested my Euro racing skills today as I rallied out Passat on one of the mountain climbs of the Tour de Suisse. I knew that as soon as I arrived in Switzerland, I'd fall in love, but I didn't quite know it would be so hard and fast. I haven't had a chance to get out on the bike yet, but I'm anxiously awaiting when the time comes. Just to pedal around the Frauenfeld country side will be quite a treat. But it's the mountains that are calling my name. Steep winding roads surrounded by manicured green grass and yellow dandelions. Church steeples that rise above the roof tops, pointing towards the heavens framed by tall, snowcapped mountain peaks as far as the eye can see. I may not come home.

Kady has the place decked out pretty tight. I suppose I would expect that from an interior designer.

We went for a walk to a castle on the hill. The scenery was cooler than the castle but the company was by far the best.

I'll defiantly choose one of these modes, but I'm not sure which one yet.

It's much cooler than being Black Listed! I just found out today that a few of the pieces I Art Directed and Designed at R&R, made it on the Short List for the ONE SHOW, which, is pretty much the best of the best in the design and advertising world. The ultimate would be to take home a Gold Pencil, and my fingers are crossed, but the competition is stacked. It's open world wide and they receive nearly 20,000 entries from all ends of the earth. LET IT RAIN

Assuming that the weather man would be wrong again, I decided to plan on another lunch ride today. My assumptions were on point and I was served a delicious plate full of single track to fulfill my hunger. The slight drizzle around 11 made the trails delightfully tacky and buttery smooth. Much nicer than yesterday and less rain than my game of hoops. After a quick loop up Dry Creek to City Creek, I pedaled back to work, missing the storm by about 15 min. When I got back, I heard a hissing coming from the back tire. A large piece of glass was imbedded deep. Thankfully they're a bit worn and in need of replacement any way. Time to throw on some new tread, hopefully squeeze in a few more rides and then Shan and I are off to Switzerland for 17 days.

Today, April 2nd, 2009 Sadie, Kashi's big sister and very best friend passed away. She was just over two years old. She had a sudden heart attack at the feet of a few loving family members. She was laid to rest in my parents back yard next to four St. Bernards and one Retriever.

Her giant smile and overly happy greetings will defiantly be missed.

I've never been a big fan of Valentines day and thankfully Shan, isn't either. She says that because of me, she doesn't need to be showered with gifts of love once a year and I'm never really in the mood to spend money on Kitschy, seasonal items anyway.

After a busy January with work and freelance projects, I felt a little burned out in my after work activities. So, unlike last year, when Shan and I spend all hours of the night turning my work space at R&R, into a scene from a Jr. High school dance. Complete with a punch bowl and cookies, streamers and balloons that covered the ceiling and floor, to dance cards and a hit list of over 100 of the greatest love songs rocking from my iPod and Creature speakers. This year, I toned it back a tiny bit. I purchased a $5 teddy bear from Smiths, cut a hole in his rear end, pulled the stuffing out and propped it on my desk with a sign that says "insert valentines here"
To top it off, here are the valentines I made for my coworkers.

WHAT'S ALL THE CHERP

I've always wondered where good ideas go when they're not used... but that's for another post. Today I'd just like to show some simple and very fun creative I did for an RFP (request for proposal) that R&R went after earlier this year.

The account was through the Department of Health, and its focus was on STD prevention/awareness. We decided to take a light-hearted approach to the topic because it seems as though the main reason people are uninformed about STDs is that they just don't want to talk about em. The RFP didn't call for any spec creative, but we decided to give them an idea of how we'd approach the campaign. While burning the midnight oil at R&R, I drew up these little characters and came up with their accompanying lines that would go along with the url our CD came up with.

Unfortunately, as we found out today, R&R was not awarded the account. Which will lead me into some more thoughts on the question I mentioned earlier: Where do good ideas go when they're not used? To be continued...

Spent most of last night working on a few freelance projects, mainly Kady's new site. Nothing up yet, but I'll keep you posted as to when she officially opens for business. You'll all want to get in on it.

Spent most of Sat. around the house with Shan. She deep cleaned and reorganized while I continued to plug away at the computer. We took a late afternoon brake and got out in the rain. Hit up the stairs at the DHS football stadium and then made Kashi show off his grace by leaping a big red parking barrier.

After a nice dinner with some Nick and Andie, we hit the field. A little indoor soccer with a bunch of Nicks friends from work. It was Shan's first time since grade school to kick the ball around and I think she faired pretty well. She continues to impress me every day with her will and desire to get out and stay healthy.

BZ and I took to the trail today. Muller Park is snow packed, buffed out and super fun right now. We almost made it to the rock but the snow gets deep on either side of the trail and the margin for error is drastically cut down. It isn't much of a ride, but up to the pipeline and back (you could even do that two or three times) makes for some excellent winter riding. Test your skills but watch out for the thick black ice under the pines near the bottom. I apologize for the low-res 1.3 MP images.

ROCKET SLEDS

I spent the weekend in the mountains (YES!) sleeping in snow caves (YES YES!) with a good friend and a bunch of kids. Despite how much camping with scouts can be like herding cats, I had a great time and am very impressed with their enthusiasm for being wet, cold, and miserable. Plus, the fact that some of them stuck it out and stayed up till 2 am sledding with the grownups. Some of them even know how to work a camera.

Bryce and I took turns giving each other as much of a push as possible to see how high and far we could launch out Jet Sled XL, cargo sled. Given the conditions, I think we faired pretty well. See more photos of our snow caving weekend here.

A TWO HOUR TOUR

Saturday was an amazing day on the Wasatch Front. Blue Bird, with plenty of new snow brings out the best in everyone and everything. We live in a truly beautiful state where so much is offered. And it's in our own back yards.

Kashi and I grabbed our trail running shoes, and headed for the Shoreline Trail. We started in Kaysville and ran North to Adams Canyon. I've always loved Adams canyon and in my opinion, there's no better time to hike it than in the dead of winter. It's not a bad idea to bring along some snowshoes, but I've always done it without.

Kashi once again proved his skills and fear of nothing as he blazed the trail a few steps in front of me. I took his boots off for the journey in the canyon, knowing that he'd probably hop in the river a few times to get a drink. Water + freezing snow + paws in boots, don't entirely mix for the most comfortable situation on the dog. Be mindful of this if you ever purchase a pair for your pup.

Dreaming of a white Christmas and then having it come true... Fantastic!

Despite how cold, and windy it was at the Bird on Sat. the snow conditions and company were well worth the stay. Plus the new sticks seemed to get the job done just right.

Matt and Kady join us from Switzerland this week which makes me very excited to spend some quality time over the holidays with the family. Festivities at Shan's parents house Christmas eve and morning, then to mine that evening. Skiing all weekend and the following week. What more could you ask for!

CREATIVE RETREAT

I spent the majority of my day at work, not at work. After the account folks took an afternoon for lunch, we, the creatives, decided to do the same. So today we had lunch at a little Tahi place downtown and then spent a few hours at the Body Worlds exhibit at The Leonardo. Shan thought it would make me sick seeing that I'm a bit uneasy when it comes to the medical scene, but I think it only has to do with needles, and IV's.

The exhibit was fascinating! I've always been amazed or in other words, overwhelmed, confused, in awe, dumb founded... by the human body. It's truly amazing what has been packaged nicely underneath our skin, and it's too bad there are so many of us who take it for granted. As complex as we are, it's really not much to ask to take a little time and eat something healthy and do something active once in a while. (sorry about that little tangent)

As I made my way through the exhibit, there was one particular space that really caught my attention. In a separate room where no one seemed to whisper a word, were displays of the birth cycle. In separate tubes from 4 weeks to 9 weeks, the growth periods were represented. Having now seen this and knowing what a baby actually looks like at only 4 weeks, my hear goes out to all mothers out there who have experienced a miscarriage. Having been there ourselves, I only wish I could have been by Shannon's side as the inevitable happened. Those of you who have been though this, I'm truly sorry and hope that over time you've received the support and care you deserve.

To sum it up.. it was some pretty fascinating visuals of an extremely fascinating system. If you haven't been, I strongly recommend it.

Shan and I took to the hills today armed with our showshoes and very happy dog. I'm still waiting for a set of bindings to mount up on the new sticks, so there was no skiing today. Hopefully soon though. Regardless, it was time well spent with the family.

Good thing SLC Bike Co. is close to work and open till 7. I was getting ready for my commute home in the dark and ran into a lighting issue. They didn't work. A quick stop at the shop took care of my nocturnal issue and left me commuting safely. Lunch ride tomorrow at high noon. Be there!
